The Ashes: Steve Smith Punishes England

Day 2 : Stumps

England 23/1 trail Australia 497/8 (Smith 211, Labuschagne 67) by 474 runs

144, 142, 92 ,211 - Steve Smith's scores in the 4 innings he has played in the Ashes. He scored his 11th ton against England and his 3rd double ton on the small island on the 2nd Day of the 4th Test. He has scored 589 runs this series despite missing a Test - 262 runs more than the next highest run-getter (Ben Stokes). He is back all right!!!

England had a couple of chances to dislodge Smith. Jofra Archer failed to hold on to a tough caught and bowled chance in the first session and he was caught at slips by Ben Stokes off Jack Leach but the spinner had overstepped to hand him a reprieve. Smith made the most of it,grafting his way to a superb double century. He was well supported by Tim Paine (58) who scored his 3rd half-century as skipper.

After Smith fell for a mammoth 211, Mitch Starc(54*) slammed a brisk fifty to push the visitors' total towards 500. Paine declared with ten overs to go in the day and Pat Cummins had England's makeshift opener Joe Denly caught at short-leg in the brief period of play.

Rory Burns (15*) and Night-watchman Craig Overton (3*) were the unbeaten batsmen at stumps.

England have a mountain to climb when play resumes on Friday.
